Belt Buckles

In Bulgarian folk culture, women used to wear belts decorated with gold or silver belt buckles. Embossing, enameling, and gemstone setting made them unique pieces of art, displaying the social status of the woman. In this piece, the buckles become a symbol of their own, an intermediary between the Earth and Heaven. The Earth is ploughed in a manner that resembles embroidered blouses, and the wheat that resembles the beams of the sun represents Heaven.
